Lake Placid, Florida, is a small town located in Highlands County. As of the 2020 census, the population is approximately 2,223. Known as the "Caladium Capital of the World," Lake Placid is famous for its caladium fields and annual Caladium Festival. Major roads and highways include U.S. Route 27, which runs north-south through the town, providing easy access to nearby cities like Sebring and Avon Park. The town was originally named Lake Stearns but was renamed in 1927 by Dr. Melvil Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System, who envisioned it as a winter resort. Lake Placid is also known for its numerous murals, which depict the town's history and culture, earning it the nickname "Town of Murals."
