Marco Island, Florida is a barrier island located in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Southwest Florida. It is the largest of Florida's Ten Thousand Islands. As of the 2020 census, the population is approximately 15,760. Major roads and highways include Collier Boulevard (County Road 951), which connects the island to the mainland, and Bald Eagle Drive, a key thoroughfare on the island. Historically, Marco Island was inhabited by the Calusa Indians before European settlers arrived in the 1500s. The island saw significant development in the 1960s and 1970s, transforming it into a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, and vibrant wildlife.
